Cloud describes an infrastructure model
Cloud hosting makes computing resources available through a provider’s infrastructure. You may rent a fixed-size virtual server, a managed application environment or a service that can adjust capacity automatically. The word “cloud” alone does not tell you which arrangement a particular plan provides.
For Joomla, ask a more concrete question: where do PHP requests execute, where does the database live and who looks after both? The answer is more useful than the product’s marketing label.
Cloud, VPS and managed are different descriptions
A virtual private server describes an allocated virtual machine. It can be part of a cloud platform. “Managed” describes work the supplier agrees to do, rather than a specific form of infrastructure.
| Description | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Fixed-size cloud VPS | CPU, memory, storage, transfer and the administrator’s responsibilities |
| Managed Joomla hosting | Which Joomla, extension and server tasks support will actually handle |
| Automatically scaling service | What scales, which limits apply and how billing changes |
| Multi-server deployment | How database, sessions and uploaded files remain consistent |
A single virtual machine does not become a multi-server application merely because the provider has many data centres. Read the architecture and availability commitments of the selected product.
Understand failure and recovery
Ask what happens if the instance, disk, database or region becomes unavailable. Establish what the provider restores automatically and what requires your intervention. A service-level agreement, an instance backup and a tested application restore answer different questions.
Keep Joomla’s files and database recoverable together, and maintain an independent copy. Our backup guide explains why a successful backup notification does not establish that the application can be restored.
Scale the application you actually run
More memory may help one workload while slow database queries or oversized images dominate another. Measure public pages, logged-in journeys and any transactional functions before deciding which resources to change.
Adding a second application server introduces decisions about sessions, uploads and database access. A smaller site may be better served by a simpler configuration with a reliable restore process than by an architecture nobody has time to maintain.
Make costs comparable
List compute, storage, backups, traffic, email, licences and administration. Check whether resources remain billable when an instance is stopped and what has to be deleted to end charges. Promotional credit is a trial allowance, rather than the recurring monthly price.
The Vultr calculator illustrates selected costs; it is not a quote for every cloud provider or a measurement of Joomla capacity. Confirm the current billing rules for the exact product you select.
Choose the responsibility model first
If you have an administrator and need control, a self-managed cloud VPS may be a sensible option to evaluate. If you need someone else to maintain the platform, agree a managed service’s scope before signing up. Neither label guarantees compatibility with a particular Joomla release or extension.
Start with the hosting fit checker, compare managed hosting and VPS responsibilities, then match the resulting requirements to a provider.
