A control-panel alternative to running your own server. GreenGeeks offers shared hosting for Joomla, with the underlying hosting platform maintained by the provider. That can suit owners who want to work on their website without administering a Linux VPS.

This is an original, documentation-based overview, checked on 4 November 2026. We have not benchmarked GreenGeeks, tested a Joomla installation on its service or reproduced customer reviews from the former directory.
What the shared-hosting product offers
The GreenGeeks Joomla page lists cPanel, a Joomla installer and SSL certificates. Its plan table sets different website and storage allowances. Use the specification for the plan you select rather than the page’s broader “unlimited” storage language.
Our editorial view is that shared hosting is a useful starting point for a site owner who prefers provider-managed infrastructure. It provides a different level of server control from Vultr’s self-managed cloud servers. Neither arrangement establishes how much traffic your particular Joomla site can handle; test the extensions and visitor journeys you actually use.
Check Joomla compatibility before purchasing
GreenGeeks documents PHP version and extension selection through cPanel for its EcoSite and reseller plans. Not every PHP extension is enabled by default. Match the selected PHP version, required modules and actual database version to your Joomla release, templates and extensions.
PHP selection alone does not prove that a site is compatible. Ask support to confirm your exact Joomla version, database requirements, scheduled tasks and any resource limits. Use our requirements guide, then test a copy before moving production. See the provider’s supported PHP versions and extensions.
Know which maintenance jobs remain yours
Provider maintenance of the shared server does not establish that someone will update Joomla, repair a third-party extension or change your template. Agree the application-support scope before buying. Unless your chosen service explicitly takes on that work, keep a named owner for Joomla updates, extensions, users and recovery testing.
- Hosting platform: the provider operates the shared environment; you work within its controls and limits.
- Joomla and extensions: check compatibility, keep supported versions and test changes on a private copy.
- Account access: maintain secure passwords, access permissions and a way to recover your account.
- Application support: ask what assistance covers Joomla errors, malware, custom code and third-party extensions.
Our managed hosting and VPS comparison explains how to compare responsibilities without treating the word “managed” as a complete specification.
Backups and restores have plan-specific limits
The backup policy distinguishes platform disaster-recovery backups from your own website copies. It describes direct restore access for EcoSite Pro and Premium, and a limited manual-restore allowance for other customers. Confirm current retention, access and any additional restore fees for the selected plan.
GreenGeeks advises customers to keep their own file and database backups and does not guarantee recovery to a specific date. Keep an independent copy and work through a Joomla restore test before relying on a recovery arrangement. The shared-hosting policy should not be assumed to apply to every GreenGeeks product.
Plan the migration and the ongoing bill
The migration policy lists one included shared-hosting migration, with different rules for cPanel and manual transfers. Additional work may cost extra. Confirm the source environment, site count, email transfer and DNS responsibilities with the team before cancelling your existing host.
Check the normal renewal cost alongside any introductory price. Confirm the currency, prepaid term, tax, domain charges, resource allowances and optional services shown for your order. We do not quote a guaranteed promotional price or apply Vultr’s credit offer to GreenGeeks.
Before switching DNS, check the migrated website, forms, mail and scheduled jobs, and keep a rollback route. Our migration checklist takes you through those decisions.
